June 2026 in Somerset (… and the ulterior coffee motive)
29 April 2026
June in Somerset arcs from the last weekend of Bath International Music Festival to dawn on Glastonbury Tor summer solstice gathering on the 21st. Three weeks, four towns, one ulterior motive.
The Frome Independent, Sunday 7 June
The Frome Independent closes Catherine Hill and Cheap Street to traffic on the first Sunday of every month. Independent traders from across Somerset fill the steep medieval streets from 10 to 3. Free.
A couple of streets over, Moo & Two is pulling Round Hill Roasters on espresso, with a filter coffee that's clear and fruity. Round Hill is one of the UK's most respected specialty roasters, and Moo & Two handles it without fuss: alt-milks dispatched cleanly, flat whites with proper texture. Five minutes further into Frome, The River House roasts its own beans under the Loud Mouth Coffee label and sells them by the bag. Two cafes worth the walk in one market town.
Dawn on the Tor, 21 June
The gathering on Glastonbury Tor starts before sunrise and draws a crowd every year. The National Trust usually runs a shuttle bus from town and stations wardens at the path. Free, unticketed, one of the few genuinely public solstice observances left in England.
Come down off the hill and walk into Finca. Their own roastery sits in Dorset, and every coffee they serve is single-origin, graded SCA 80 or above. This is a roasting operation with a retail front, not a cafe that happens to care about coffee. After a dawn on the Tor, the cleanest espresso in Glastonbury is the right next move, and there are bags to take home.
Bath, the closing week
The Bath Festival runs 30 May to 7 June across Bath Abbey, the Guildhall and the Pump Room. Bath Fringe Festival overlaps it, 22 May to 7 June, spreading circus, comedy, theatre and spoken word across smaller venues. The first week of June is when both close.
Five minutes from the Abbey, Colonna & Small's is where you drink Colonna Coffee at the source. Multiple UK Barista Championship titles, World Barista Championship recognition. Walk in, tell the barista what you like, let them do the rest. A couple of streets the other way, The Colombian Company is built around a single farm: Finca las Cruces in Risaralda, sourced directly by the Colombian-born founder. The provenance has roots, not branding. Between concerts in Bath, either is your stop.
The events get you here in June. The coffee, in the cup and in the bag, is what you take home.
