Leeds anchors with North Star, Kapow and Maude all roasting in-city; Sheffield backs it with Kelham Island, Division Street, and Frazer's. York is quieter but Divine roasts on-site.

Bristol runs eight working roasteries, from Sweven's competition lots to Full Court Press publishing producer prices; Bath has Colonna. Frome's Loud Mouth roasts in a unit on the edge of town and pours at Black Swan Arts.

Ancoats and the Northern Quarter give Manchester the region's roastery density; Liverpool adds 92 Degrees and Bold Street Coffee in the Baltic Triangle, and Lancaster's Atkinsons has been roasting since 1837.

Oxford runs more working roasteries than most English cities twice its size. Out in the Cotswolds, Rave operates in Cirencester and Golden Sheep roasts at Stroud's Shambles market.

Quarter Horse roasts in the Jewellery Quarter; 200 Degrees roasts in Nottingham and runs shops in both cities, with Outpost as the serious single-origin counterpoint.

Strangers put Norwich on the specialty map in 2009 and the city has kept building. Cambridge has its own roaster cluster and Dom's: six seats, no signboard, seriously focused.

Brighton's coastal address undersells it: Redroaster has been on vintage Diedrich machines for 25 years, Pelicano wholesale since 2014, Trading Post in the UK barista circuit. Canterbury runs its own beans at Micro Roastery further east.

Four roasteries in Exeter, including 18g and EXE Coffee Roasters; Falmouth roasts in town at Dark Pony and Forty Five, and Yallah in Helston supplies much of the Cornwall coast.

Newcastle's roaster-cafe culture runs deep, and Durham packs serious independents into a walkable cathedral city.

Bad Hand roasts in Bournemouth and runs one of the more serious tasting rooms on the south coast; Winchester backs it with Blue Hour Coffee and a dedicated roasting school. Salisbury adds The Yard, where rotating guest roasters share the menu with pour-over.

Farrer's has been roasting in Kendal since 1819; Podda & Wren, Red Bank and Rinscoffee have followed. The Lakes cafes run on Carvetii, which roasts inside the national park.
